Hanna Muurinen's work draws inspiration from the natural world, while her personal experiences intertwine with broader, shared human themes where vulnerability and strength can coexist. Memories and emotions are embodied in her sculptures as androgynous, human-like soul figures. Through these figures, she explores stories and layers of life, where they become vessels for reflection and for the dialogue between the inner world and the surrounding environment.

Her practice combines traditional and contemporary ceramic techniques. She primarily works with primitive firing methods such as raku and pit firing, embracing their unpredictability and the unique surfaces they create. Alongside these ancient processes, she also employs modern ceramic techniques when they best serve the artistic intent of each piece.

"I am drawn to what cannot be fully controlled. During the process, the work transforms beyond intention and something more honest begins to emerge."

"I am interested in the unfinished, change, and the traces that time and experience leave within us - what we carry with us and how it shapes the way we see the world."

artist

Hanna Muurinen is a self-taught artist based in North Karelia, Finland, whose practice is guided by a close relationship with nature. Forest, lakes, and the changing seasons are not merely sources of inspiration for her, but an integral part of how she understands the world and her place within it.

As a child, becoming an artist was her greatest dream. However, experiences of bullying and personal trauma led her life in different directions for decades, taking her away from creative work. Reconnecting with creativity became a way to process lived experiences, reconnect with herself, and give form to things that cannot always be expressed through words.

As a self-taught artist, she has developed her artistic voice on her own terms - through experimentation, observation, and trust in her own perspective. This open inquisitive approach remains central to her practice.

"Not everything needs to be understood to be felt."
